December 21st marks the official start of winter, so you have precious little time left for late fall lawn care. Why does lawn care really matter in the winter? In Brevard County, a good pest and lawn care program is an absolute must throughout the year thanks to the warm temperatures. The average temperature in December sits right at 73 degrees, and that means that while your lawn certainly isn’t going to see the growth pattern it might in June, it’s going to need some maintenance if you want it to look amazing after those spring rains hit.

Winterizing Your Lawn

The best late fall lawn care programs involve proper winterization of your grass. This process involves fertilizing in October, then overseeding in late November and early December. Without the process, you could be endangering the health of your grass in the spring. If you haven’t yet mowed the lawn short for the season, the time to do that is now to help minimize the pest population that may create real problems for your winter lawn.

You’ll also want to clear off any toys, tools, or branches that have fallen to help keep the lawn clear. Leaving objects on the grass for too long can kill your turf and create problematic brown patches. You will also want to irrigate your lawn every one to two weeks. If you don’t already have a rain gauge, now is a great time to get one because you want to keep your lawn at about an inch of water each week. Water in between rains to be sure your grass is getting enough.
