Winter is approaching. That means you have precious little time left for late-fall lawn care. You may wonder why lawn care matters this time of the year. It’s because Brevard County is so warm. The average temperature in December sits at 73 degrees, so your lawn is going to need some maintenance if you want it to look amazing after those spring rains hit.

The best late-fall lawn care programs involve proper winterization of your grass. This process involves fertilizing in October, then overseeding in late November and early December. Without that process, you could be endangering the health of your grass in the spring. If you haven’t yet mowed the lawn short for the season, do that now to help minimize the pest population that may create problems in winter.

You’ll also want to clear off any toys, tools or branches that have fallen to help keep the lawn clear. Leaving objects on the grass for too long can kill your turf and create problematic brown patches.

You will also want to irrigate your lawn every one to two weeks. If you don’t already have a rain gauge, now is a great time to get one. You’ll want to keep your lawn at about an inch of water each week. Be sure to water in between rains so your grass is getting enough.
