Few things are more disgusting than finding pests crawling inside a container of flour, cereal, rice or some other food item. Among these pantry pests are cigarette beetles, rice weevils and grain moths. They can be difficult to eradicate. However, there are things you can do to discourage these infestations.

  • Keep your cabinets and pantry clean. Wipe down your storage areas frequently. You’ll want to vacuum your shelves and wash everything with warm, soapy water. If you happen to notice any cracks, be sure to caulk them right away. Pantry pests would love nothing more than to hide there.
  • Keep the items sealed. If you’re using the packages from the store, you may want to reconsider. Putting your groceries in sealed containers can help immensely. Just make sure your containers have tight seals.
  • Overlook nothing. Keep in mind that these unwelcome visitors aren’t limited to your pantry. If you keep dog or cat food, bird seed, or even fish food, you could still be attracting pantry pests. Keeping these materials sealed can go a long way toward control.
