Silverfish fall into the category of nuisance pests. They’re not dangerous, just annoying to have around the house. And that’s reason enough to keep them out.

These wingless insects grow up to half an inch long. They are typically a blue or grayish silver. Silverfish have two long antennae and three distinct tails. They eat mold and fungi, but they’ll also eat your shampoo, soap and even books. They like to live in warm, moist, dark areas, so you typically see them in basements or bathrooms.

Silverfish can’t reproduce if you can keep the humidity level low in your home. Use a dehumidifier, if necessary, to keep the air dry. You’ll also want to seal your house, repairing holes or cracks, including those where utility lines and pipes enter your home.

If you bring used furniture, cartons, or boxes into your home regularly, you should inspect them for silverfish, as they tend to hide in these items. Reduce any possible food sources for these insects by placing old books and papers in sealed plastic. Vacuum regularly and keep your home clean.

If you do have a silverfish problem in your home, don’t worry: They don’t bite or sting. But they can do damage to items around the house. Contact Slug-A-Bug today to learn more. Or call (321) 259-7844 for a free evaluation.
