Slug-A-Bug is excited to begin its annual efforts in support of the Second Harvest Food Bank, a nonprofit dedicated to providing life-saving services to families in need. It’s all about making a difference in our community.

Our team will be contributing to this important cause, especially during the holiday season, by helping provide meals and hope to children. We’re collecting non-perishable food items from Sept. 9 through Nov. 29, 2024, at our US 1 location in Melbourne.

Even in a beautiful and vibrant place like Brevard County, food insecurity is often an issue. That’s why Second Harvest Food Bank is committed to fighting hunger and providing nourishment to those who need it most.

Many residents of Brevard, including children and seniors, struggle to get enough nutritious food. Hunger isn’t always visible, but it’s there, affecting individuals and families from all walks of life.

On a personal note, organizations like Second  Harvest Food Bank made a big difference in my own life when I was a child. There were times my mom and I would have gone without meals, had it not been for such caring groups. Hunger was a reality for us and I’m grateful for the help we received.

Second Harvest Food Bank, affiliated with Feeding America, works tirelessly to source, store, and distribute food to local pantries, soup kitchens and other community organizations. Their mission is straightforward, yet powerful: to close the gap between surplus food and those who desperately need it.

One of their key events is the annual food drive, which brings together local businesses, schools, and residents to collect non-perishable food items and funding. It’s a powerful reminder that, together, we can make a meaningful difference in the lives of those facing hunger.

There are several ways you can help. First, you can donate non-perishable food items during the food drive, such as canned goods, pasta, rice, peanut butter, 100-percent fruit juices and nonfat dry milk. There is also a need for diapers and toiletries (unopened and kept separate from the food items). Click here for a complete list of critically needed items.

You can also volunteer to help sort, pack and distribute food to partner agencies.

Financial support is important, too. Consider making a monetary donation to support Second Harvest’s ongoing efforts. And be sure to spread the word. Let people know about the hunger problem in Brevard County.

Drop off your food items Monday through Friday, between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m., at our location at 2091 N. Harbor City Blvd., Melbourne. Thanks in advance for helping those in need.
