Fire ants are a wake-up call to anyone who moves to Brevard County from up north. You may have had pests before, but you’ve never been bitten by anything quite as lively as a fire ant. Let’s just say they earned their name. Since fire ants attack in packs, you usually don’t get bitten by just one. You can be munched upon by a whole colony. There are three basic avenues you can take in treating fire ants: baits, mound treatments and broadcast treatments. Most folks leave these kinds of fire ant control treatments to the professionals, but if you want to try it yourself, this guide can help you on your way.
Baits
If baits are the way you want to go, it is important that you attack your entire lawn at the same time. A common rookie mistake is to only offer baits outside one hill or in one section of your lawn. Just because you’ve not found mounds in other parts of your lawn doesn’t mean there aren’t ants there. You need to take a broad, multi-faceted approach to killing fire ants, otherwise, you’ll never win the battle. The early days of spring are often thought of as the best time for baits, but if you are desperate, any time of year will do.
Mound treatments
A mound treatment is exactly what it sounds like: a treatment for just one mound. This is considered a stop-gap treatment that can remove a single, towering mound from your yard fast. The average bait treatment can take as long as a month to begin delivering results. A mound treatment can work much faster, but it is only going to work on that one mound, and not on the overreaching fire ant issue your lawn is having.
Broadcast insecticides
A broadcast insecticide is an insecticide treatment that is sprayed over your entire lawn. Extra attention can be given to areas that you know are rife with fire ants, but a true broadcast treatment will spray down the entire lawn. Most insecticides are liquid and are added to water and then sprayed over your entire lawn, but there are granular versions, as well, that come with a spreader for proper allocation.
Many of the top insecticides also treat other common lawn pests, which can make springing for the high cost worthwhile. If you aren’t sure which avenue to take, contact a Brevard County pest control expert to learn more.
