As summer begins to wane into early fall, you may start to wonder about your lawn. After all, you’ve had your summer lawn care in place for weeks now. What needs to change in you lawn care as the weather shifts into fall? Here are a few tips that may help.

  • Check your sprinklers. Some water districts suggest you can only water once a week in the late summer/early fall, so you’ll want to follow those guidelines carefully. Your timer has to be set properly, and if it gets particularly wet one week, be sure that you turn your irrigation system off.
  • In most cases, this is the ideal time for your bi-annual fertilizer application. Fertilizer has lots of tiny nutrients in it that will help feed your lawn throughout the year, so ignoring this all important final application could be disastrous to your lawn’s early growth next season.
  • Take a close look at weed control now. Before they ever get a chance to establish themselves and go to seed, you’ll want to kill them right away. If you’re going to do it with a chemical solution, though, make certain you select the right herbicide for your turf and use the right concentration to meet your needs.
  • It’s also the ideal time to replant any bare spots you may have noticed in your lawn. Remember, in a place like Florida, that warm weather growing season extends fairly late into the fall, so plant seed or sod if you’re not worried about an early freeze this year. You’ll get the cover you want with the look your lawn deserves, even for those October barbeques. Just be sure you keep it well watered during the establishment period.
