If you’re like most homeowners, you don’t want to do anything that could damage your home. It’s possible though, that you’re already doing something that is unknowingly damaging your home. Wondering what it is? Here are three things you might be doing that sends out a signal to termites everywhere to invade your home:

  1. Wood-to-Earth Contact: Many winged termitesWhether your siding sits right at the dirt, you have some posts that sit directly in the ground, or you have wood mulch around your house that comes into contact with your foundation, you’re sending an engraved invitation to the termites. Even wood that has been pressure treated isn’t termite-safe, so be sure that you’re not giving them the opportunity to get in that way.
  2. Humid Crawl Spaces: There are few things termites like better than damp, humid areas where there’s easy access to food and few predators. If that defines your crawl space, you may want to add some additional vents to the area. Many codes call for a square foot vent for every 150 square feet of vent spacing. You can also have a vapor barrier installed to help with this problem.
  3. Excessive Moisture: Watering a lot? Termites love moist spaces, and if it gets too wet next to your foundation, you may find yourself with a termite problem. Even if you just have a leaky gutter system, you could still have moisture problems that you don’t currently know about.
