The spring season is upon us. The season of cold dormancy is over and the warm skies result in the growth of your yard. The grass is lush and green and your garden is coming to life. You could have the best lawn on the block. But then you look down, and you see it… just one at first but more sprout up every day. Weeds! Nobody likes to look at the lawn they work so hard to maintain and see these pesky little “plants.” Weeds can make even the nicest lawn look uncared for. Here are a few tips to help keep the weeds in check:
Get Them When They Are Weak!
The best time to action against weeds is when they are still new. The smaller a weed above the soil line, the smaller the roots are below. Most weeds, when new, have what is called a “tread root”. This root is thin and has very few to little runners. Therefore, pulling a weed with a new root such as this will be easy. It will also help keep you from disrupting the soil or digging up lawn that surrounds the weed.
Make Your Lawn Strong
One great way to take care of weeds is to create a lawn that can resist them. Most of the time, a nice, healthy lawn will be able to resist weeds. Regular aeration of your lawn can help it to become strong. It strengthens the roots of your lawn, which will give you a denser lawn, making it harder for weeds to grow.
Last But Not Least
If you find that weeds have gotten out of control, you still have one option. There are a wide array of different herbicides out on the market. Choose one that will kill weeds while not hurting your lawn. Follow the directions on the packaging and you can be sure your weed problem will soon be gone.
No one likes weeds. They take away from the visual appeal of a lawn. And now, you know what to do if weeds threaten your yard.
