No homeowner wants to deal with an invasion of rodents, but many associate this problem with the cooler months of the year. There’s a good reason for that – it usually happens as the fall weather starts to set in, even in the warmer fall temperatures in Brevard County. That’s not the only time you can see these problem pests, though. They can hit your house even in the summer. Wondering what you can do to keep them out? Here are some tips:
- Repair potential entry points immediately. If you have a hole even as small as the size of an ink pen, a mouse can get in your house. If you have one that’s 3/4 of an inch in width, you could be inviting a rat into your house. Take a walk outside your home. Look around inside too. If you see spots where mice or rats could invade, deal with them immediately.
- Get rid of possible food sources. Mice and rats would love nothing more than the crumbs from the toast you prepared this morning that you neglected to wipe off the counter. They’ll eat the leftovers out of your unlidded trash can. They’ll even chew through the cereal box to eat your child’s breakfast. Keep all of your food in heavy, plastic containers. Get a lid on your trash can. Make sure you don’t leave pet food out overnight. Steps like these can rob these pests of food in your home.
- Keep yard waste away from your home. Rodents need good places to hide, and yard waste can provide the stepping stone necessary to get into your house sooner. Remove your yard waste immediately, and if you must let it sit out for some time, make sure it’s several feet from your home.
