Chances are you know a bit about lawn grubs. These little, white grubs are the larvae of scarab beetles. They may look alike, but these C-shaped white larvae can be from any number of species. What’s common among them is that they will destroy lawns by feeding on grass roots. The beetles they grow into will destroy gardens as well. This makes late Fall lawn care especially important, but how do you get rid of lawn grubs? Lawn pest control is difficult when they’re buried a half-foot under the dirt.
Grubs Prevention
The best grubs prevention starts with effective lawn care. Whether you do it yourself or rely on a lawn care service, keeping a thick lawn with healthy grass deters grubs. Like many pests, they’ll focus on areas that are already unhealthy or damaged. If there are no such areas, they’ll often look elsewhere.
Some insecticides are more useful than others, but keeping a healthy environment can often be the most effective form of prevention. Many predators will feed on these larvae, including ants and ground beetles (the type that won’t destroy your lawn) that can catch them underground as well as above. You’ll want to make sure you don’t eliminate these predators more than you eliminate lawn grubs themselves.
Fall Lawn Care
Fall is when these lawn grubs will do the most damage. They’re growing at a fast rate as well as preparing for winter, which means they need a lot of food. That food is the roots of your grass and garden. Lawn damage in odd shapes, and patches of grass that feel airy beneath, spongy at the step, or that come up with little resistance all indicate the presence of lawn grubs.
You can peel back grass and look for grubs by cutting deeply and pulling the turf back. Measure a square foot. If you see five grubs or more per square foot, you have a problem. Even if you see fewer, you may want to have the problem inspected more thoroughly.
Get Rid of Lawn Grubs
Lawn pest control can be very difficult at the outset. Once you get a regimen going, it’s pretty easy to keep it up, though. To get rid of lawn grubs, often the the best solution is a lawn care service with experience in assessing what different lawns need. The same solution won’t fit every circumstance, and expertise like this can often find the most effective, least damaging outcome.
