Do you keep seeing spiders in your home? You probably wonder what’s drawing them there and how to keep them out. Spider prevention isn’t really about the number of spiders there are in your home. It’s about the number of insects that are in your home. Spiders feed on these insects. The more insects, the more spiders.
Do chemicals work on spiders?
Chemicals aren’t that effective against spiders. If you’ve ever watched a spider move, you’ll notice only the very tips of its feet ever touch most surfaces. Their circulatory system doesn’t reach the bottom of their feet, so even if it walks through a chemical you’ve sprayed, chances are good that it won’t pick it up in a way that matters. Unlike many insects, spiders don’t clean themselves with their mouths, so they won’t pick up the chemicals that way either.
How does spider prevention work?
The most effective way of controlling spiders in your home is by controlling their food sources. Spiders aren’t in your home because they eat your crumbs, but many insects are. You may get flies, fruit flies, ants, small moths, and any number of other bugs that feed on crumbs, spills, or pick food waste out of your trash.
Clean up food prep areas, store food well, lid your trash and take it out regularly, and form other good cleaning habits that limit the amount of food there is for insects. If there are fewer insects drawn to your home, there is less prey for spiders to feed on. Your home is an ecosystem – the more prey there is, the more predators (like spiders and centipedes) will make it their hunting ground.
Does Florida have widow spiders?
A note of warning: have you ever come across a very messy type of web that doesn’t seem like it has much structure to it? When you clean it, it makes a snapping or crackling sound, almost like Rice Krispies in milk? These are widow webs. There are four types of widow spiders in Florida, some more dangerous than others.
Widows rarely kill, but it’s still a possibility. It’s more likely they make you incredibly sick and cause chronic, debilitating, lifelong health conditions. If you have Black Widow or other widow spiders, it’s often best to call a Brevard County pest control service. If you’ve been bitten by any kind of widow spider, seek out emergency health care immediately.
What about a spider infestation?
A pest control service is also recommended if you have an infestation, which is marked by a large number of the same type of spider in your home. If you’ve tried the tips above and still can’t get a handle on spiders in your home, contact Slug-A-Bug has the expertise to develop and help you maintain effective spider prevention.
