What exactly is all over your kitchen counter? If you see something that looks like freshly ground black pepper or coffee grounds, you may very well have roaches in your house. Roach droppings from small cockroaches look exactly like you’ve spilled coffee grounds. If you have larger roaches on your hands, you may see dark cylinder-shaped droppings with blunt ends, but that isn’t the only sign that you need roach pest control.
Other Symptoms of a Roach Problem
Besides the droppings, you may notice an unpleasant odor in areas where you currently have a roach problem. It may be musty or smell a bit oily. Often the egg cases, which are usually shaped like an oval, may be found behind furniture or in other hidden locations. The bodies of dead cockroaches may also appear throughout the house. You may want to check the bathrooms, the laundry room or your kitchen cabinets with a flashlight to see if you can actually spot any cockroaches in your home.
If you do notice a problem, roach removal is best left to the professionals, as DIY sprays do little to destroy the nest.
How to Keep Roaches Out of Your House
Don’t have a roach problem? It’s best to keep it that way. There are a few ways to prevent roaches in your home. Start by sealing any potential entry points. Utility entry points and crawl spaces all make perfect roach entry points, so seal those with caulk to ensure they can’t get in. Empty your trash on a regular basis, and make sure all of your food is stored in sealed containers. You’ll also want to keep everything as clean as possible. Sweep regularly and wipe your counters down routinely. Don’t leave dirty dishes overnight in the sink or the dishwasher. If you have any water issues (like leaks or dripping faucets), enlist the help of a professional to repair them immediately.
