Fall is a beautiful time of year for trees, especially if you have taken the time to care for them throughout the spring and summer months. If you want to enjoy the trees after winter, there is still more maintenance recommended during fall. Here are three essential things you can do to keep your trees as healthy as possible.
Tip 1: Once the leaves have all fallen off, it’s time for a dormant inspection. Check each tree for cracks in the bark leaking sticky fluid, bark that’s falling off, usual growths, discoloration or anything else that seems out of the ordinary. If the trees appear to be diseased or damaged beyond repair, it’s a good idea to take them out and replace them.
Tip 2: For the young trees, take time to look over the structure. Make a decision as to where pruning needs to take place. The cuts on the trees heal faster in the late fall and winter because the spring rains often bring damaging fungi and bacteria. Take off the season’s growth, or at least most of it. On the older trees, make sure to remove any dead wood and any areas that are starting to become diseased.
Tip 3: Apply appropriate pest control measures to each tree. Your landscaping professional can help you decide just what needs to be done with each. Despite the cooler temperatures, pests can still be a problem in the coming months.
