A healthy environment is important to the Slug-A-Bug team. That’s why we recently teamed up with the Spoil Island Project and the Friends of the Spoil Islands to adopt an island in the Indian River. Led by the Florida Department of Environmental Protection, the project’s goals are to provide recreational opportunities and environmental preservation. We’ll be conducting regular cleanups and maintenance on island BC47.
A spoil island is human-created, the result of channel dredging. Between Brevard and Indian River counties, there are nearly 100. People fish off these islands and camp on them, often leaving behind trash. Without a program like the Spoil Island Project, many of these would fall into serious neglect.
