Florida has a year-round flea season because the weather never gets cold enough to kill them off. But the problem can sometimes ratchet up with the onset of the summer heat – fleas thrive in humidity. That means it’s time to consider prepping your home, pets and yard to keep these high-jumping insects at bay during some of their favorite months.
Avoid infestations
As most people know, fleas are pests, causing itchy bites and even serious illnesses in pets and humans. Fortunately, there are a few steps that can help ensure you don’t face a full-on infestation.
First, be sure to treat all your furry pets with a flea preventative. Many different kinds are available, including topical treatments, oral medications and natural remedies. Take care to follow the instructions on the packaging so your pet is adequately protected. If you have more than one pet, you should treat them all, even if only one is showing signs of a flea infestation. Otherwise, the problem can spread readily from one animal to another.
Get rid of their breeding grounds
Next, make sure your yard and other outdoor areas are clean. Fleas thrive in moist, shady environments, so mow the grass regularly and trim back any bushes and overgrown plants. Check your pet’s bedding, blankets, and toys and wash them regularly in hot, soapy water to eliminate any fleas and their eggs. These areas are prime breeding grounds for these insects, so this step is critical.
Finally and importantly, put your vacuum to work. Frequent vacuuming is one of the best ways to eliminate fleas and their eggs from carpets, rugs and other upholstered surfaces. Empty the vacuum bag or canister after each use to avoid bringing fleas back into the house.
By following these steps, you can help keep your home and pets free from infestations this flea season. If you are still concerned, contact Slug-A-Bug for a free no-obligation visit at (321) 259-7844.
