Wasps are insects you should always take seriously. Keeping a respectful distance is usually the wisest course of action, and we all know why. This is especially true of those allergic to the venom of stinging insects.

We at Slug-A-Bug understand the concerns people have when they notice nests forming on their homes or discover colonies living underground. Seeing them congregate in your space like that can be unsettling.

Providing a benefit

It’s worth noting that wasps are actually beneficial to our environment. Being predators, they help cull insect populations and can even help to pollinate flowers. However, it’s important to maintain a healthy respect and take precautions when necessary.

Most wasps are social insects, living in colonies with many individuals. They can become aggressive when they feel threatened, communicating “high alert” status with one another through a complex system of pheromones. Large numbers become agitated all at once when there’s a perceived threat.

Hornets and wasps

Incidentally, hornets (genus Vespa) are a subset of wasps (superfamilies Chrysidoidea, Vespoidea, and Apoidea). The former tend to have more robust bodies than other kinds of wasps and are less vividly patterned. All of them build nests that are paper-like, made of wood pulp they chew and spit out. Many hornets have nests concealed in hollows of trees, house walls or underground. Paper wasps are easily identifiable by their practice of dangling their legs in flight.

The most important thing to remember is that wasps are territorial and become aggressive only when they feel threatened. If you come across a nest, it’s best to avoid it altogether and call a pest control professional to deal with it. Slug-A-Bug can remove small, easily accessible nests.

Stay calm

If you do encounter a wasp or a swarm of them, try to remain calm and move away slowly. Don’t swat or attempt to harm them, as this will only make them more aggressive.

Remember, wasps don’t come after you unless you give them a reason. If you’re minding your own business, they aren’t likely to bother you.

Because wasps are attracted to sweet scents, it’s best not to wear perfume or sweet-smelling lotions when outdoors. Avoiding sugary drinks and foods outside can also help to reduce the risk of attracting these insects.

Generally speaking, you shouldn’t be overly afraid of wasps. But it’s important to be aware of the dangers they may entail. Also, know that Slug-A-Bug is available for a free, no obligation inspection. Call us at (321) 259-7844.
