American prosperity is a thing many of us take for granted. But despite our nation’s comparatively high standard of living, many children suffer the pangs of chronic hunger.

Providing food over the weekend

Slug-A-Bug is making a difference in Brevard County by supporting the Children’s Hunger Project, an organization that provides nourishing food to students over the weekend through backpacks filled with nonperishable items. The organization works closely with the Brevard County School District.

Sadly, child hunger is a widespread issue across the United States, and many people remain unaware of its severity.

In Brevard County, the situation is no different. From as far north as Scottsmoor, Mims and Titusville, down the coast to Melbourne, Palm Bay and Micco, children are in need.

Struggling with hunger

Slug-A-Bug volunteers stocking backpacksAs many as 55 percent of families struggle to choose between paying for food or essential utilities, while 13.4 percent of families live below the poverty line. More than 50 percent of students receive free or reduced-price meals at school, with some elementary schools reporting that 80 percent or more of their students fall into this category.

The consequences of hunger are severe, particularly for children. Lack of adequate nourishment can lead to developmental problems and behavioral issues, in addition to impacting a child’s ability to learn. Many students go home on Friday with limited food options, making it a challenge for them to get the nourishment they need to thrive. This is where the Children’s Hunger Project steps in.

Keeping kids happy and healthy

Project volunteers fill backpacks with enough healthy food to help children get through the weekend. The backpacks are lightweight, require no cooking, and contain nonperishable items that will not spoil over the weekend. They make an enormous difference to children and their families, providing nourishment to ensure they remain healthy and happy.

Slug-A-Bug is proud to support this excellent charity and we invite others to join the effort. For only about 52 cents per day, you can ensure a child will receive enough food throughout the entire school year. Alternatively, volunteers are welcome to stock the backpacks. This is a rewarding way to support your community and make a real difference in the lives of those who need it most. Employees from Slug-A-Bug have enjoyed participating in these volunteer sessions.
