Slug-A-Bug’s operations are always geared toward environmental responsibility. Protecting the Brevard County ecosystem is on our minds perpetually. That’s one of the main reasons our team has adopted and regularly cares for one of the Indian River’s Spoil Islands.
Human made
These remarkable islands are human-made, most of them the result of dredging between the years of 1951 and 1961. They range in size from just more than an acre to 7.5 acres.
The Spoil Islands are popular destinations here in Brevard County, and Slug-A-Bug is dedicated to preserving their beauty. They serve as idyllic retreats for recreation. People flock there to unwind, camp, fish, watch for dolphins and simply enjoy the surrounding waters.
Popularity comes with problems
Regrettably, this popularity brings with it the issue of litter and discarded objects, detracting from the experience for others.
To address this problem, Slug-A-Bug has taken the initiative to “adopt” an island known as BC47. We have formed teams that regularly embark on cleanup missions to restore and sustain its unadulterated condition. In March 2022, we organized our inaugural cleanup event, where our team worked diligently to remove 170 pounds of trash and debris.
A joint effort
Slug-A-Bug is undertaking this effort in concert with the Friends of the Spoil Islands, an organization dedicated to preserving these beautiful land masses that dot the lagoon. The organization offers a unique opportunity for individuals and companies to pitch in and help care for an island, pledging to clean it four times annually. Slug-A-Bug became involved in this work because it aligns perfectly with the team’s core value of environmental stewardship.
Incidentally, some of these islands are highly sensitive. Visitors should be aware that they are designated variously as “recreational,” “conservation” and “critical wildlife areas.” The recreational islands are open to the public. The other two designated areas contain important bird nesting sites and are off limits to visitors.
Help us keep these islands clean
For those who wish to explore or camp on one the recreational islands, Slug-A-Bug asks that you leave no trace behind: no trash, human waste or pet waste. There are no bathroom facilities and no public water source, so plan accordingly.
In the meantime, our team will make periodic visits to BC47 to help keep it as pristine as possible. Enjoy our island! And help us keep it clean.
