In a recent blog, we discussed termites and how Slug-A-Bug deals effectively with these ravaging pests. Their appearance in a home can cause considerable distress because of the damage they’re capable of inflicting. For that reason, it’s helpful to know if winged insects showing up in your home are termites or ants.
Distinguishing flying termites from flying ants can be challenging because they share some similarities in appearance. However, there are a few key characteristics that can help you differentiate between the two.
Differing shapes and antennae
The first is body shape. Termites have a straight, broad waistline and a relatively uniform body shape, giving them a more cylindrical appearance. In contrast, ants have a distinctly segmented body with a narrow waistline, appearing more wasp-like.
The two also have differing antennae. If your eyesight is good enough or if you have a magnifying glass, you’ll notice that termite antennae are straight. Ant antennae are elbowed or bent.
Wing and color variations
The wings vary between the two insects. Both flying termites and flying ants have two pairs of wings, but there are differences in their size, shape, and arrangement. In termites, the wings are of equal length and are longer than their bodies, extending beyond the abdomen. In ants, the front wings are larger than the hind wings, and the wings are usually shorter than their body length.
Termites are generally pale, light brown or translucent. Ants, on the other hand, can vary in color, ranging from black and brown to reddish or yellowish.
