3 Tips from the Turf Experts at Slug-A-Bug

Central Florida, including Brevard County, continues to experience drought conditions, which are expected to last through June. Right now it’s more important than ever to adjust and optimize your lawn care routine! The key is to protect your turf and conserve water. At Slug-A-Bug, we’re committed to delivering expert lawn care, but your partnership – especially with watering and mowing – is essential to maintaining a healthy yard through the dry season.

Here are a three quick and effective tips to help your lawn survive and thrive:

1. Water Deeply, But Less Often

To encourage strong root growth and reduce evaporation:

  • Water at least twice per week, aiming for 1 inch of water per session.
  • Water early in the morning, ideally between 4-8 AM, when temperatures are cooler.

Brevard County Watering Rules:

  • Even-numbered addresses: Thursday & Sunday
  • Odd-numbered addresses: Wednesday & Saturday

2. Mow at the Proper Height

Cutting your grass too short can increase drought stress. Follow these height guidelines for your turf type:

  • St. Augustinegrass: 3.5-4 inches
  • Zoysiagrass: 2-2.5 inches
  • Bermudagrass: 1-1.5 inches
  • Bahiagrass: 3-4 inches

Pro Tip: Never remove more than 1/3 of the blade height at once. This helps prevent shock and keeps your grass healthier.

3. Leave the Clippings

Instead of bagging them, let grass clippings remain on the lawn. They act as a natural mulch, helping to retain soil moisture and returning nutrients to the turf.

We truly appreciate your dedication to lawn care during this dry stretch. With your help, we can keep your lawn looking healthy, vibrant, and ready to bounce back when the rains return.
